From GlobMapLab to Perthes.Digital
Perthes.Digital was established as a spin-off from the prototype of the 'GlobMapLab' virtual map laboratory. The ‘GlobMapLab’ was developed as part of a project funded by the Free State of Thuringia from 2012 to 2015 entitled "Globalisation and Local Knowledge: Collection-related Research on the Justus Perthes Publishing House" at the University of Erfurt.
The objective of the project was to showcase selected digitised holdings from the Perthes Collection and to provide scholars with research opportunities and a platform for network-based work. The ‘GlobMapLab’ thus reflects the specific character of the Perthes Collection as a unique map production archive of modern cartography. The maps, when viewed in relation to corresponding objects, are understood as contextual materials that shed light on the history of all space-centred and map-based disciplines since the 19th century.
In 2017, the GlobMapLab was integrated into the Digital Historical Library of Erfurt/Gotha, hosted by the ThULB of Jena. The GlobMapLab was further developed as 'Perthes.Digital', including a map tool.
‘Perthes.Digital’ will be integrated into the overarching platform of the Gotha collections, 'Gotha.Digital', and linked to the map, book and archive holdings of the Perthes Collection.
